 Figo, 2001 FIFA World Player

Figo has achieved the 2001 FIFA World Player award, which is an acknowledgement as the best footballer among some 240 million that FIFA has in record across the world. Raul was third. Real Madrid was the main centre of attention in the world football gala held at Zurich's World Trade Centre. Figo and Raul were there with Real Madrid's President, Florentino Perez and its Sports General Director, Jorge Valdano.
Figo and Raul got most of the attention at this FIFA world football gala. Both of them were fighting alongside English David Beckham for the top award for the 2001 world footballer. Both Figo and Raul were favourite beforehand in the polls. After a very close battle, all 130 national coaches voting for this award elected the international Portuguese player, who, in Joseph Blatter's words (FIFA President), is the most unbelievable player from Portugal ever since legendary Eusebio; he has the touch of an artist and the skills to be the most complete player ever".
After the name of the winner was known, Figo recieved the prize from Liberian George Weah (1995's winner) and said, in Spanish, "I am delighted to receive this trophy. I think that my other two mates, myself and lots of other players in the world would deserve this for the work we are doing in each of our teams. Eventually I was the lucky one. I would like to thank all my teammates for the support and help they have given me to achieve it. This is to them, to my family, especially my wife and daughter".

Raul Gonzalez, on the other hand, received the award for the third world player of the year and said: "it is a pride for me to win this award alongside those two excellent footballers. I hope I can go on enjoying football as much as I have done so far".

David Beckham, Manchester player, was second behind Figo, and said "it is an honour for me to win this award and share this celebration with these two fantastic world players. This is to my wife and daughter".

The first Real Madrid player receiving this award
Figo has become the first Real Madrid player to obtain this award. Zidane won it twice when he was in Juventus Turin. In 1997 and 2000, Roberto Carlos and Figo were second and in 1998, Davor Suker was third.

In addition, Raul is the first Spanish footballer to be in the list of awarded players ever since the prize was established in 1991. This year 2001, 130 national coaches have elected the best world players by voting, which means the participation was a lot higher than the first year when 66 national coaches were voting.

Figo and Raul were on a very tight schedule today. A private flight picked them up in Madrid this morning at 10:00 to go to Zurich. Once there, after a press conference at 13:30, the players attended the award-giving gala starting at 16:15. When the gala finished, another privet aircraft brought them back to Madrid and, next thing, at about 21:00, they will be joining the team's preparation for Tuesday's match against Nastic Tarragona. This will be the first chance for Madrid followers to honour Figo at Santiago Bernabeu for becoming 2001 world player as well as Raul for his third place in these awards.
